It was only a few months ago when Khala began rapidly losing her vision. In December 2024, she was waking up with headaches and poor sight. She went to the store and realized she couldn't read anything. She knew something was wrong and immediately went to the doctor.
Her diagnosis: severe open-angle glaucoma and optic nerve damage in both eyes.
Khala experiences tunnel vision and light sensitivity. She can no longer drive and was originally worried that she would never be able to do the things she enjoys.
Luckily, First Aid for the Blind showed her that there is hope.
"FAFTB showed that there are a lot of things you can still do when you have vision loss," said Khala. "I feel like the training helped me out a lot and helped me retain a lot of information. I would definitely recommend for others to take FAFTB because it does help you prepare and assist you in many ways."
Khala specifically enjoyed learning about the VoiceOver app for her iPhone. Our lead trainer, Brian Clark, has created his own tutorial to help blind folks learn to use this helpful tool.
"My experience was amazing," said Khala, "and what stood out most to me was how great my instructor Brian Clark was with every lesson."
Khala hopes to get into podcasting to share her story and other positive messages.
"My advice to anyone who is dealing with vision loss is to stay strong," she said. "You will have good days and bad days. You must continue to go on with life, because time does not stop for anyone. Always choose to make your own peace and focus on yourself. Always remember you can turn a negative into a positive."
