First Aid for the Blind has launched a new program aimed to help blind folks master screen readers for optimal usage!

The Screen Reader Foundations Program is a structured, remote training service designed to help individuals who are fully blind or experiencing significant vision loss transition to independent use of a Windows computer with a screen reader. This service is intended for clients are new to screen readers; have limited, inefficient, or fragmented screen reader skills; or need to regain independence for employment, education, or daily computer use.

The best part is that clients can choose a track of focus that matches their personal goals! The tracks include Business Enterprise, Higher Education, and Customer Service, and General Usage.

"We're very proud to launch this new program," said Kurt Deichmann, president and CEO of FAFTB. "We've seen the need for a more advanced, robust training when it comes to screen readers. We're happy we can fill that gap. Mastering screen readers is often a key to unlocking education and work opportunities, which in turn helps people feel confident and independent. Blind people should have opportunities to achieve all the things they want to. That's what we're about. And this program is another way we fulfill that purpose."

The program focuses on functional independence, not just learning commands. Students are taught how to navigate, problem-solve, recover from errors, and work efficiently in real-world Windows environments. This is a guided self-study program with 1-2 sessions per week with a certified trainer over Zoom. These sessions are recorded for later study by the client. Additionally, regular testing will be done to help the client master skills.

For clients who do not have access to a personal Windows computer, FAFTB may be able to help acquire one through the program.
